Don’t just go green on St. Patrick’s  Day. Challenge yourself to be green all month long, with these 30 low-cost/no-cost energy-saving tips!

 

 

 

 

  1. Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth.
  2. Limit shower length to 5-7 minutes.
  3. Clean your dryer’s lint trap before each load.
  4. Let hot food cool before storing in the refrigerator.
  5. Use outdoor security lights with a photocell and/or motion sensor.
  6. Turn large-screen TVs off completely when not in use.
  7. Make sure drapes and shades are open during the day to catch free solar heat in the winter.
  8. Install low-flow showerheads.
  9. Dry consecutive loads to harvest heat remaining in dryer from the last load.
  10. If you are heating water to cook, use hot tap water instead of cold.
  11. Turn off any unnecessary lighting.
  12. Ensure all new appliances you purchase are ENERGY STAR® approved.
  13. Change HVAC filters monthly.
  14. Insulate the attic access door.
  15. Set water heater temperature to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  16. Always use the cold-water rinse when doing laundry.
  17. Unplug unused refrigerators or freezers.
  18. Replace any light bulb that burns more than one hour per day with its equivalent compact fluorescent lamp.
  19. Unplug battery chargers when not needed.
  20. Turn computers and monitors off when not in use.
  21. Caulk along baseboards with a clear sealant.
  22. Keep your garage door down. A warmer garage in the winter and a cooler garage in the summer will save energy.
  23. Fix dripping faucets.
  24. When cooking on the range, use pot lids to help food cook faster.
  25. Remember to turn off hair curling irons and hot rollers.
  26. Turn off coffee maker when not in use.
  27. Set thermostats to 78 degrees Fahrenheit in summer; 68 degrees in winter.
  28. Do not close off rooms that are conditioned by forced-air systems.
  29. Use cold water for garbage disposal.
  30. Only run fully-loaded dishwasher.
