Never bring portable generators, camp stoves and grills into your home; they should only be used outside. Learn more about how to safely stay warm during power outages.
Follow tips for keeping food safe in an emergency.
Watch for frostbite. Warning signs include white or grayish-yellow skin, numbness and skin that feels unusually firm or waxy. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately. If medical help is not available, get the victim to a warm location and immerse the affected area in warm water. Frostbitten areas are numb and can be easily burned so avoid using heating pads, fireplaces or radiators for warming. Do not rub the frostbitten area; this could cause more damage.
Watch for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, memory loss, fumbling hands, slurred speech and drowsiness. If the victim’s body temperature is below 95 degrees, seek medical help immediately. If medical help is not available, get the victim to a warm location, remove wet clothing, warm the center of the body first using an electric blanket and if conscious, give the victim warm, non-alcoholic beverages.
Follow directions from local officials about driving during snow and ice storms, and drive with caution.
WINTER WEATHER DRIVING

Minimize travel during winter weather. If you can postpone your trip or if it is non-essential, stay in when the weather is really bad. If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

IF YOU MUST DRIVE:

Maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.
Keep an extra Ready kit in the trunk of your car. In addition to the basic essentials, consider adding a portable cell phone charger, ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction and jumper cables.
Follow directions from local officials about driving during snow and ice storms, and drive with caution.
SLOW DOWN to at least half your normal speed and use a low gear as you drive.
Don’t stop going up a hill. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
Do not use cruise control and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers.
Be mindful of road crews working to clear the snow and ice from the roadway.
Motorists should not pass a dump truck spreading the salt/gravel mixture, as gravel may bounce up and could break windshields. Follow at least 100 feet behind all vehicles.
If you come to a traffic signal that is not working, treat it as a four-way stop.
Beware of black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses and shady areas. Four-wheel-drive may help your vehicle get going in the slushy stuff, but it’s of no use when you’re trying to steer or safely stop on a slippery road surface.
Watch for fallen trees or power lines.
If at any point during your trip you feel that the weather is too bad to continue driving, simply stay put.
STOPPED OR STALLED?

Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Do not set out on foot unless you can see a building close by where you know you can take shelter.
Don’t idle for a long time with the windows up or in an enclosed space.
Run the engine and heater about 10 minutes each hour to keep warm and to conserve your battery and gasoline. When the engine is running, open a downwind window slightly for ventilation and periodically clear snow from the exhaust pipe. This will protect you from possible carbon monoxide poisoning.
Exercise to maintain body heat, but avoid overexertion.

KNOW YOUR WINTER WEATHER TERMS
Knowing winter weather terms helps you know when to put your personal preparedness plan into action. Here are three key winter weather terms to know:

A winter storm watch is issued when significant winter weather (i.e. 2 inches or more of snow, ½ inch or more of sleet, ¼ inch or more of freezing rain, or a combination of these events) is possible, but not imminent. A wide range of weather events can prompt a winter storm watch so make sure to pay attention to what the watch is calling for specifically. A watch is typically issued 12 to 48 hours before the possibility of winter weather. This is the time to prepare.
A winter weather advisory indicates that winter weather is imminent and may cause inconveniences; monitor media for your local impacts. A winter weather advisory is issued up to 36 hours before an event where an 80 percent or greater chance of winter precipitation (i.e. snow, freezing rain/drizzle, sleet or blowing snow) is expected to cause inconveniences, but does not meet warning criteria. This is the time to put your winter weather safety plan into action.
A winter storm warning is issued when a significant winter storm (i.e., 2 inches or more of snow, ½ inch or more of sleet, ¼ inch or more of freezing rain, or a combination of these events) is imminent and is a dangerous threat to life and property. A winter storm warning can also be issued at forecaster and emergency manager discretion when significant impacts are expected but snow, sleet or freezing rain criteria is not met. These warnings are typically issued up to 36 hours before an event that has an 80 percent or greater chance of significant winter precipitation. This is the time to put your winter weather safety plan into action.

For more information on making home ready for the winter with preservation replacement windows, owens corning roofing, pro via doors or james hardie siding contact us at aladdinhomepros.com or 678-528-7115.

While the danger from winter weather varies across the state, most Georgians are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives.
