Whether you’re planning new construction or a retrofit, knowing the best insulation practices can mean serious energy savings.

According to the US Department of Energy, heating and cooling efforts account for 50 to 70 percent of energy used in the average home. Give your HVAC units a rest by equipping your home with the right insulation.

Insulation Basics

Without adequate insulation, your heating and cooling systems have to work overtime. Air gravitates from warmer to cooler areas until no temperature difference remains. During the winter, the warm air in your house escapes to the attic, basement, garage, or simply outside.

In the summer, hot air invades the cool retreat indoors. Insulation is meant to restrict the flow of heat, helping to reduce energy bills and boost in-home comfort.

R-Values

We know that insulation is essential, but how much do you actually need? The ability of insulation to limit heat exchange is measured as an R-value—the higher the R-value, the stronger the insulation.

R-values work in sums; so if you have one type of insulation sitting on top of another, you can add the R-values together to get your total insulating capacity.

The type of insulation—its material, thickness, and density—will determine the R-value. Not every house requires the same R-value, however.

The type of home, the year it was built, the heating and cooling systems used, and the surrounding climate will all factor into determining the appropriate R-value needed for your home.

In other words, what’s best for your home may not be what’s best for your neighbor down the street, let alone your parents who live two states away. Thankfully, the US Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR have resources for calculating the right R-value for your home.

Insulation Types and Placement

Loose Fill

Often referred to as “blown-in” insulation, loose fill works well for attic floors, wall cavities, and hard-to-reach places. Loose fill settles after installation, reducing its overall effectiveness.

However, the designated R-value of any loose fill should measure the insulation’s resistance to heat exchange after settling has occurred. When blowing loose fill into an open wall cavity, adhesives can be added to reduce settling.

Keep in mind that insulation will not perform up to its stated R-value if it is compressed. Avoid placing heavier insulation blankets on top of loose fill.

Fiberglass is the most common type of loose fill used in Atlanta homes today.

Considered a “green” option, fiberglass is made from sand and can be easily recycled and does not contain harmful chemicals.

Blanket or Batt Insulation

Available as batts or in rolls, these precut fiberglass blankets fit standard widths between wall studs and floor joists.

During new construction, fiberglass batts are placed between wall studs before adding sheetrock on top. They can be individually cut to accommodate irregularities such as the location of electrical switches, outlets, and windows.

If you are remodeling and the cavities will be exposed, batts can be easily added.

Rebates

Make sure to check your local utility company for energy rebates.

Sawnee Emc Rebates

Jackson EMC Rebates

An insulation professional can help determine which way the vapor barrier should face based on your specific climate and heating and cooling setup.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to insulation, so a quality insulation professional can be a huge asset. He or she can assess your insulation needs based on the unique makeup of your home as well as the climate in which you live.

Aladdin Insulation provides free energy assessment and evaluation to determine what your home needs and family deserves in comfort, safety and energy savings. 678-528-7115 or aladdininsulation.com

Air sealing your attic can save you money every month in the long run!

Air sealing your attic offers ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency through stopping air leaks in your attic. Our first suggestion is to find gaps that need air sealing in the attic area.

Any penetration in the attic area can cause conditioned air to leak and the HVAC unit to work harder. These penetrations can be from plumbing, light fixtures or duct work. When looking at these holes individually they may seem small and insignificant; but if you were to combine all the holes they could add up to the equivalent of 2 feet gap. Air leakage from a 2 ft gap would be the equivalent of leaving a large window open all year long. Air sealing your attic offers ways to improve your homes energy efficiency through stopping air leaks in your attic. Save money by sealing your attic.

Below are pictures examples of gaps that are air sealed in an attic area. You can use fire block foam, which is an inexpensive material. Insulation may have to be moved to find all of the penetrations in the attic. Make sure to replace the insulation evenly after air sealing. When the air sealing is complete and insulation is even, this would be a good time to measure the depth of your insulation. Most homes are not properly insulated. The recommended r-value for energy efficiency is R-60 in Georgia.

Get optimal R-value, cleaner air and lower heating and cooling costs.

Insulation removal might be necessary if the original material becomes damaged. Pests and excess moisture can result in unhealthy air quality for your family and an energy drain for your home. You want to choose a professional insulation installation company because unlike other providers, Aladdin Insulation will offer you a professional evaluation of your home, identifying specific problem areas and solutions, as well as making sure your insulation is the cleanest, safest option for you and your family.

Old Water Damage
If your house has suffered water damage or an undetected leak, your fiber-based thermal protection could have been damaged. While newer varieties resist moisture better than before, your home’s original barrier might have gotten wet. This can compress the barrier and lower its R-value. Worse, it can lead to hidden mold and mildew in your attic.

If fungus gets into your heating and air conditioning ducts, it can worsen allergies and lead to other respiratory distress. Insulation removal and replacement with a new layer means cleaner and healthier air throughout your house.

Pest Infestations
Have four-legged visitors been hiding out in your attic insulation? Many types of critters can get inside but the most common are rodents. They are attracted to various kinds of fiber-based thermal barriers; they shred it, nest in it and use it as a toilet. Rats alone can carry more than 30 different diseases.

Droppings, urine and natural oils may be in your thermal barrier right now. We can do a complete removal and decontamination, and add a fresh replacement. Even more important, we can block the path your tiny intruders took!

Boost Your Energy Efficiency
Is your home as energy efficient as it could be? Not if the current thermal barrier is matted down by old damage. Cellulose and Foam insulation relies on density to achieve its resistance to the transfer of heat. If it’s compressed, or settled the R-value will decrease and be open to temperature changes. Warm air will escape from your home to the outside in winter and into your home during the summer.

If your energy bills have been rising, it’s time to look into it. Let us help!

Expert Insulation Removal
Aladdin Insulation uses very expensive equipment to remove attic insulation. Cellulose, aka. (TAP or Greenfiber types) newspaper insulation can be smelly, dusty, and damp. We take full precautions before we take out old material. We take care not to stir up any contaminated material.

Blanket-type fiberglass is the easiest to remove. We hand-roll it and wrap it securely to reduce the chances of contaminants becoming airborne. And we clean up any dirty areas before we blow in a fresh layer. Blown-in fibers are extracted with secure hoses attached to powerful vacuums. Because the vacuum source is outside your home, it creates a negative pressure that ensures fibers will not fly around and contaminate your indoor air space. Cellulose and paper type materials are raked, broken up and then vacuumed out of your attic. Once everything is removed we can deodorize and disinfect with Envirocon, safe for pets and children safe.

Is Insulation Removal Necessary?
Not always. This is why it pays to hire a professional insulation company and not use a pest control or heating and air company. It can save you money to add fresh insulation on top of the base you have now, even if the original layer is dusty or scattered with debris. However, contamination by fungus or bio-hazardous waste is another matter! Call Aladdin and we will perform a thorough inspection. Please call us today at 678-528-7115

Count on us for an honest assessment and reliable remediation in attic insulation. Don’t take risks with your family’s health.

Sometimes insulation removal entails small areas. We will do a careful examination and take out only what’s necessary, then add more material to boost your thermal protection. This saves you money and creates better long-term energy savings.

New Insulation Install
Fresh home insulation and proper air sealing can save you from 35 to 50 percent on your heating and air conditioning bills. Choose from the latest advances in blown in loose-fibers from top manufacturers like Pro Thermic. We can do an insulation install in less than a day, and you will enjoy the results for many years. From housetop to underground, we can restore your indoor environment to maximum efficiency.

Beware of Pest Control Insulation or Cellulose types of insulation

Cellulose insulation is actually shredded paper with a fire retardant chemical known as borate. During the manufacturing process, this paper is broken down into its most basic element, cellular fibers from a tree. It’s these fibers that provide the insulating power for cellulose insulation.

Installing the granular fibers that comprise cellulose insulation is done with a specialized machine known as an insulation blower. During the installation, the cellulose fibers flow through a long hose guided by the insulation contractor where it’s blown or sprayed into the space. Controls on the machine allow the installer to select the density of the insulation which enables them to densely pack it into a wall or floor cavity. Dense packing cellulose insulation into a wall or floor creates a continuous even layer of insulation. Pipes, wires, ductwork and electrical outlets are no problem for cellulose insulation because it is blown into the space in tiny pieces that fill in around the obstacles.

The Cons of Cellulose:

Cellulose settles 20% a year. That means you lose R-Value every year. Sure you can blow more in 5 years, however homes in the south have 1/2 inch sheet rock and the heavy cellulose causes bowing.

The fire retardant and pest inhibitors break down. Over time moisture and humidity break the cellulose (paper) membrane down losing its fire rating.

Rats and roaches love newspaper. They can chew it up and mix it with their saliva to form breeding nests using their hair as well to make a nesting bed.

Cellulose is cheaper to install (about half the cost of fiberglass) but twice as expensive to remove. Cellulose over time absorbs moisture and becomes clunky so its much harder to vacuum out. The average cost is $1.50 to remove vs. $1 to remove fiberglass per sq ft.

Installation is simple and easy and anyone can install. Properly trained and quality equipment is not needed.

Is this really what you want in your attic?

Unless your home was specially constructed for energy efficiency, you can probably reduce your energy bills by adding insulation to your existing home. Many older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years.

To determine whether you should attempt adding insulation, you first need to find out how much insulation you already have in your home and where it is. A qualified home energy auditor will include an insulation check as a routine part of a whole-house energy assessment. An energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, will also help identify areas of your home that are in need of air sealing. (Before you insulate, you should make sure that your home is properly air sealed.)

If you don’t want an energy assessment, you need to find out the following for yourself:

If you live in a newer house, you can probably get this information from the builder. If you live in an older house, you’ll have to inspect the insulation.

*Thickness must not be used as the sole factor in determining the R-value of loose-fill insulation, particularly for attic insulation.

You can air seal your attic. If you add up all of the leaks, holes and gaps in a typical home, it would be like having a window open every day of the year, according to ENERGY STAR®. That’s a lot of room for conditioned air to leave and outdoor air to get in. Air leaks are inefficient, but even worse, they tend to make your home’s temperatures uneven. For instance, an upstairs that’s hotter than the rest of the house in the summer and cooler during the winter.

Jeff Wilson TV Author and Energy efficient expert made a nice video of how you can air sealing your homes attic and we want to share with you.

Some of the prime areas for air leaks are in your attic. You can seal your attic by filling these leaks with caulk or expandable foam if you know what to look for:
•Boxes for recessed lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and other electrical devices that hang from the ceiling

•Holes where wires enter the tops of walls and go down to switches or outlets

•Vents that go through the attic and into the living space below

Notes of caution

Step carefully. Walk carefully on top of attic joists and not in between, where you may fall through.

Older recessed lighting fixtures. Incandescent light fixtures can get very hot, creating a fire hazard if you seal or insulate too closely. In these cases, you can buy a special cap that goes over top of the fixture, allowing you to safely seal around it.

Outside vents. Don’t fill any vents to the outside because the attic is supposed to be vented outdoors. Remember, your unfinished attic should be the same temperature as the outdoors. Just fill the holes over the living space.

Take a few minutes to air seal your attic. You’ll go a long ways by air sealing your attic toward making your home more comfortable and efficient

Sometimes hiring a professional to do air sealing your attic as well as updating your homes insulation is recommended. To find out more call 678-528-7115 or aladdininsulation.com

Improve Indoor Air Quality And Curb Seasonal Allergies. If you have trouble with allergies, you may be quick to correlate seasonal irritations with outdoor triggers such as ragweed, pollen and mold. However, poor indoor air quality in your own home could be the culprit to blame for runny noses, itchy eyes and in some cases, severe symptoms like respiratory issues, bronchitis and asthma.

The Environmental Protection Agency found in poor indoor air quality survey that Americans spend 87% of their lives indoors and that indoor air pollutant levels are up to 100 times higher than levels you may find outside. While it’s alarming to think about how many toxins you are possibly exposed to on a regular basis, there are simple steps you can take to boost the condition of the air you breathe in your home.

Refrain from Smoking Indoors
There is no acceptable level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking indoors one time is enough to infect the rest of the poor indoor air quality of your house, even if you’re in a room with the doors closed.

Vacuum Regularly
Invest in a heavy-duty vacuum and clean your carpets regularly to remove dust and other pollutants brought in from outside.

Clean Bedding
Wash sheets, pillows and comforters in warm water routinely to cut down on exposure to dust mites and other allergens.

Let Air in Through Windows
Most heating and cooling units recirculate inside air so when weather permits, let fresh air in, if even just for a short time.

Keep a Tidy Home
Clean your home consistently using safe cleaning supplies.

Dispose of Unused Chemicals and Paint
Paint outdoors and choose non-toxic adhesive, finishes and varnishes where possible.

Groom Pets
Washing and grooming your pets regularly will reduce shedding and dander.

Use the Exhaust Fan Over Your Stove
The benefit of an external exhausted range hood is that it pulls out potentially toxic pollutants and gasses from the air in your kitchen.

Use Fans in Bathrooms
Exhaust fans knock out moisture from the bathroom and reduce fumes from cleaning agents that could potentially cause health issues.

Switch out Air Filters
Changing the air filters in your heating and cooling system on a regular basis is important to maintaining optimal indoor air quality in your home.

Clean Air Ducts

Most of the in-home air arrives through ducts as part of your heating and cooling system. Those air ducts can get dirty with microbes, mildew, bacteria and loads of dust and dirt. Regular duct cleaning can remove built-up debris.

In addition to these important actions there are several advanced choices for contending with allergy-inducing pollution in your home.

Whole-home central humidifiers keep humidity within one percent of your preferred levels throughout your home, creating a healthier environment by lessening dry sinuses, itchy skin and sore throats and keeping wood from damaging or warping. They can also lessen the occurrences of bacteria, viruses and respiratory infections. Proper humidification levels are just as important in both hot and cold environments. Too little humidity leaves the body vulnerable to infections whereas too much humidity establishes ideal breeding grounds for mold, mildew and dust mites.

Options for high-efficiency air filtration and cleaners that kill airborne contaminants include High Efficiency Particulate Air Filtration and Germicidal UV Light Systems.

Energy Recovery Ventilation Units bring in the correct amount of outside air which is especially important in the fall and winter months ahead.

Aladdin Insulation can give you a free home indoor air quality and comfort analysis so you can rest assured that your family is breathing the healthiest air possible. To Improve Indoor Air Quality And Curb Seasonal Allergies Call 678-528-7115 or schedule your appointment online.

Insulation is measured in R-values. the higher the R-value, the better your walls and roof will resist the transfer of heat. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends ranges of R-values based on local heating and cooling costs and climate conditions in different areas of the nation. The map and chart below show the DOE recommendations for how insulation in Georgia works. State and local codes in some parts of the country may require lower R-values than the DOE recommendations, which are based on cost effectiveness.

Although how insulation in Georgia works, insulation can be made from a variety of materials, it usually comes in three types; each type has different characteristics.

Rolls and Batts or Blanket Insulation
are flexible products made from mineral fibers, such as fiberglass and rock wool. They are available in widths suited to standard spacings of wall studs and attic or floor joists: 2×4 walls can hold R-13 or R-15 batts; 2×6 walls can have R-19 or R-21 products.
